Be Humble and Serve

by Michelle White

Exodus 12:14, [5–10], 11–14
John 13:1–17, 31b–35

You call me Teacher and Lord, and you are right, for that is what I am. So if I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. For I have set you an example, that you also should do as I have done to you.

–—John 13:13–15

This passage is a lesson in humility, love, and service. Jesus chose to perform an act usually reserved for the lowest servant, washing his disciples’ feet. By doing this, he demonstrated that love and grace are found in serving others.

Jesus showed patience and tenderness to all, even Judas, demonstrating unmerited love. This demonstrates that God’s grace covers all creation, even those who turn away from God. This act of unmerited love and grace challenges us to think about how we respond to others who hurt or betray us. Do we respond with love, as Jesus did?

Reflecting on Peter’s reaction and Jesus’ response helps us go into ourselves and check our pride and humility. We do not always understand the circumstances in our lives, but if we take the time to ask God for clarity and guidance, it will become clear, and we will respond accordingly.

While painting this angel, all I could think about was how grateful I am to know Jesus and to be a humble servant and a compassionate human. When I am painting, I feel closer to God than at any other time, it is a time I can truly sink into prayer. I have been asked to do commission work, but I have to decline as I have no idea what my paintings will be in the end. When I am in such deep prayer, I go with the Spirit.

Jesus is calling all of us to be humble and serve. He wants us to follow his example. Serving others, especially in ways that may seem small or beneath us, is at the center of the Christian life. When we serve with love and humility, we reflect Christ to the world.

Prayer
Oh God, help me to serve with humility and grace. You alone are my counselor and healer. Amen.
