Join United Women in Faith’s Lenten Action for Justice

This is a time to turn faith into action.

As we journey through this season of Lent, United Women in Faith invites you to join us in reflecting deeply on our call to “do justice, love kindness and walk humbly with [our] God” (Micah 6:8). This is a time to turn our faith into action, as we seek to be a presence of justice and peace in a world that urgently needs it. You can do so today by joining United Women in Faith’s Lenten Action for Justice.

Executive orders and policies by the Trump administration and recent legislative decisions made in Congress impede United Women in Faith’s social justice priorities (end mass incarceration and advance climate justice) and negatively affect the lives of women, children, and youth in our communities, the United States, and around the world.

We are concerned about policies, like the Laken Riley Act, that disproportionately criminalize immigrant communities and people of color. The systemic rollback of civil rights protections, especially for communities of color, stands as a stark reminder of the racial injustices that continue to plague our society. Executive orders that withdraw the United States from the Paris Agreement and freeze the disbursement of federal funds, like the Inflation Reduction Act, not only threaten our nation’s ability to transition to a just renewable energy economy but also set us back decades in climate, conservation, health, and environmental justice efforts by eliminating hard-sought-for environmental standards and opening up lands to fossil fuel extraction and extractive industries.

Prevent executive overreach

Unfortunately, Congress has not done enough to counter these harmful policies to prevent executive overreach. They should use all their available power to resist any of the administration’s policies that undermine the wellbeing of creation, women, youth, and children. Additionally, local and state governments must do more. “Sanctuary” municipalities should stand strong and protect their residents – including their undocumented residents – by refusing to collude with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) in any efforts toward mass deportation.

Shirley Chisholm said, “Of course laws will not eliminate prejudice from the hearts of human beings. But that is no reason to allow prejudice to continue to be enshrined in our laws – to perpetuate injustice through inaction.”

Would you join us and take action today to support racial and climate justice by using the links below to reach out to Congress and your local newspapers?
