Scholarship Story: Becoming a Social Worker in Zimbabwe
by Mitchelle Mare
My final year of studying at Africa University to be a social worker has been a life-changing experience. I have acquired important knowledge and gained valuable skills in community development, social work, and social policy. I now have a better awareness of the difficulties that vulnerable groups encounter and the significance of empowerment, advocacy, and intervention. I have gained knowledge on how to evaluate social challenges, put in place efficient support networks, and collaborate with people and organizations to bring about significant change through coursework and real-world experiences. These abilities will be crucial to my future career as a social worker since they will allow me to support social justice efforts and offer individuals in need of expert assistance.
Serving Community and Church

Beyond my professional life, this year’s education has improved my capacity to serve my community and church. I now have a better basis to assist people dealing with social issues while incorporating Christian principles into my work as an active member of the Africa University United Methodist Church Students Movement, Church and Society, and the United Methodist Church Evangelical Team. My understanding of social work concepts will enable me to create effective outreach initiatives, provide vulnerable community members with support, and promote laws that enhance their quality of life. In addition to molding my career goals, this year has strengthened my resolve to uplift people via service and faith.
Completing an Academic Journey
I am extremely grateful for the scholarship, as it provides a vital opportunity to overcome the financial barriers that have consistently hindered my academic progress. As a final-year student pursuing a BSc Honors in Social Work, I have worked tirelessly to reach this stage despite challenges such as financial limitations and commuting issues. It will allow me to complete my academic journey with dignity and celebrate my achievements alongside my peers without being constrained by financial obstacles.
This scholarship means more to me than just covering immediate costs. It represents a vote of confidence in my abilities as a student and as a future social worker committed to serving my community. This scholarship is an investment in my future, ultimately benefiting those around me.
