NEW YORK – As many in the United States marked the 60th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, Sally Vonner, General Secretary and CEO of United Women in Faith, issued the following statement:

“The Voting Rights Act of 1965 (VRA) was a monumental policy that was won via blood, sweat, and tears. We should not be content to celebrate what was, without ensuring that its strength and vigor remain today and well into the future.

“The truth is that while the VRA cleared the path to the ballot box for many, it has been steadily undermined since its enactment. Most noteworthy was the gutting of the VRA in the Shelby v. Holder decision in June 2013. There has been a steady drumbeat of attacks on the VRA since that time that have denied and abridged the right to vote.

“Today and every day, we commit ourselves to defending past victories and reimaging what is possible for the future. Just as our foremothers were on the frontlines fighting for the ballot box, the present-day members of United Women in Faith will push forward for a world where women, children, and youth are equipped to flourish and fully participate in a thriving democracy.”
