NEW YORK – Following news out of Vatican City, United Women in Faith celebrated the election of Pope Leo XIV, the first Pope from the United States. United Women in Faith released the following statement from Sally Vonner, the organization’s General Secretary and CEO:
“We celebrate alongside the Catholic Church as Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, now known as Pope Leo XIV, is announced to be the new pontiff. We echo the Pope’s thanks for the late Pope Francis, as well as his call for peace and unity.
“Pope Leo XIV has emphasized the importance of being connected with the people we aim to serve. He worked with Pope Francis to appoint women to positions of power. We hope he will continue these values and actions in his papacy and keep an open mind to the breadth of issues that may arise.
“The election of the first Pope from the United States comes at a significant time for our country and the world. We at United Women in Faith pray that Pope Leo XIV will show grace and courage and that he will continue to advocate for women and all who have historically been excluded.
“As Pope Leo XIV begins his papacy, we hold him in prayer and look forward to working together in the pursuit of justice.”
