NEW YORK – United Women in Faith joined 18 Christian organizations and Churches for Middle East Peace in signing a joint statement urging Congress to support the War Powers Resolutions (S.J.Res.59 and H.Con.Res.38) in response to recent U.S. military actions against Iran. The organization released the following statement, attributable to General Secretary and CEO Sally Vonner:
“We are urging our leaders to prioritize diplomacy and de-escalation over military conflict. While a ceasefire was announced on June 23, Congressional action remains necessary to ensure the United States is not drawn into war.
“You cannot drop bombs and then proclaim, ‘this is the time for peace.’ History has shown us that innocent people—especially women and children—bear the heaviest burden in times of war. It is a moral failure to ignore the lessons of our past. We must pursue alternative paths to peace, including the active involvement of women in peace negotiations.
“As an organization dedicated to the well-being of women, children, and youth, we call on the United States to choose diplomacy. Women and children are the most likely to be displaced, to suffer gender-based violence, and to be exploited during conflict. We will not stop advocating for a just and lasting peace.”
