NEW YORK – In November, roughly 40 million Americans may go hungry as SNAP benefits run dry. In one of the richest nations in the world, no one should go to sleep hungry. United Women in Faith, the largest denominational organization for women, today urged communities to care for one another, and for elected officials to take swift action. The organization issued the following statement, which can be attributed to its Sally Vonner, United Women in Faith CEO:
“United Women in Faith and its affiliates are deeply concerned about the impacts of losing access to SNAP benefits as funds run out during the government shutdown. Our mission is to improve the lives of women, children, and youth; losing access to SNAP will create massive harm to our families and our country.
“In this moment, we call for communities across the nation to band together to provide mutual aid and support for those who need it most. We encourage local congregations and leaders to see if there is a National Mission Institution nearby and support local food pantries, which can provide further resources to those who need them.
“United Women in Faith will always promote love, equity, and justice to ensure that women, children, and youth are safe, secure, and supported. At this time of uncertainty, we urge our elected officials to support proposed efforts to fund SNAP through this shutdown, both at the state and federal levels. We also ask our neighbors to contact their elected officials and build bonds in their communities so that all our families and children may have enough food.”
