NEW YORK – United Women in Faith mourned the devastating impact of recent floods across the U.S. and called for more to be done to prevent future tragedies, particularly as hurricane season has begun. It released the following statement, which can be attributed to its executive for Economic and Environmental Justice, Ilka Vega:
“As flooding has continued from Texas to the Carolinas, from New Mexico to New Jersey and New York, and most recently to Tennessee, we are heartbroken to see the devastation left behind. We send our condolences and heartfelt prayers to all those impacted by these floods, and to those who are or will be affected by Hurricane Erin. With lives lost and communities destroyed, the impact of this disaster is unfathomable.
“As we mourn and move toward recovery, we urge elected officials to take action so that weather emergencies spurred by the climate crisis can be mitigated. With each passing year, severe weather incidents are becoming more frequent and severe. Now that the hurricane season has seen its start, that harm will become more evident.
“We cannot wait. The nation’s leaders must do all they can to address the climate crisis in order to protect current and future generations. We are asking our members and all others to call your representatives and use our environmental justice resources to join United Women in Faith in action.
“As people of faith, we mourn with those who mourn, and we hold in our hearts those impacted by these deadly events. We are committed to advocating for community climate resiliency, renewable energy and just policies that mitigate and remedy the worst effects of climate emergencies.”
