United Women in Faith Affirms Ruling on Birthright Citizenship

For Immediate Release

“As people of faith, we are called to show the love of God, regardless of a person’s background or identity. We further believe that policies that undermine safety and security for one group indeed undermine safety and security for us all. That’s why we are relieved by the Supreme Court ruling on birthright citizenship.

“The ruling affirms longstanding precedent guaranteed by the 14th Amendment on who is American. No single president, and no single movement, should change or undermine our notion of who belongs. As Scripture reminds us, ‘What does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?’ (Micah 6:8). Now it’s time to return to the work of building a beloved community, even as this work becomes more difficult in the face of recent Supreme Court rulings (including revoking Temporary Protected Status for Haitians and Syrians) and actions and polices of the current administration.

“In this moment, we are discerning strategies for strengthening the tapestry of communities after months of policy setbacks and language that divides and others. As people of faith, this is our work and divine calling.”
