United Women in Faith Mourns & Urges Action After the Colombia Earthquake

NEW YORK — United Women in Faith today mourned the devastating impacts of the recent earthquake in Colombia. They released the following statement, which may be attributed to Sally Vonner, general secretary and CEO:

“We are heartbroken by the devastation caused by the recent earthquake in Colombia. With more than 250 dead and the search for survivors ongoing, we mourn for everyone impacted by this disaster and pray for successful rescues.

“We hold in our hearts our international mission partners in Bogotá, Colombia. Our sisters at El Centro Ecuménico para América Latina de Comunicación (CEPALC) work hard to support the Zenu Indigenous Women’s Association in creating and strengthening small businesses. We pray that they are safe from harm, and that CEPALC will be able to continue supporting their communities and those experiencing the worst of this disaster.

“Moreover, we know this comes less than two months after the catastrophic earthquakes in neighboring Venezuela, which killed many thousands of people. The recency of these events is a reminder that climate change contributes to the frequency of earthquakes. We urge action so that natural disasters made more destructive by climate change may be diminished and encourage all to find climate justice resources here.

“For resources to support these communities in recovery efforts, we encourage giving through the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR). As people of faith, we are committed to supporting those harmed by natural disasters and advancing policies that alleviate the worst effects of such emergencies.”
